I had my first sighting of the cats in the wild. And what a sighting it was....2 leopards and a tiger at one place. They were probably fighting over a kill....

Unfortunately I could not take photographs as I think I am not a good photographer for taking night shots. The cats were 15-20 feet away from us...ufff will never forget this trip in my life.

The film Bombaat's songs were released on July 2. Songs are amazing...I liked the one rendered by Sonu Nigam. Kyrics by Jayanth Kaikini and music by Mano Murthy. I am so impressed by this song that I decided to listen to the song and pen down the lyrics, it is just too good.

Here is the lyrics for all those movie buffs who may want it,

Maatinalli Helalaarenu, Rekheyalli geechalaarenu
Aadaranu haadadene uliyalaarenu
Antha Roopasi Nanna preyasi
Elli iruvaloo nanna kayisi
Naanu Prema Rogi, Dayamaadi vaasi maadabedi
Antha Roopasi Nanna Preyasi
Omme avalige nanna torisi

Kannallide aa kannallidde, hombelakina nava neelanjana
Enillide ahaa enillide, hoomanasina aa madhugunjana,
Bere enu kaanalaare,yaara naanu dooralare,
Saaku innu dooravannu taalalarenu,

Just saw a clipping of the movie Nagarahavu which saw the debut of Vishnuvardhan (his character's name in the move is Ramachari ), the clip was followed by the song Havina Dwesha Hannerdu Varusha , this below set of lines ooze confidence and give me goose bumps.....

" Aa ramanu bitta banada guriyu yendu tappilla
     Yendendu tappilla,
E ramachari kenako gandu innu huttilla,
     Aa gande huttilla,
      Aa Bheemana baladavanu, Chanakyana chaladavanu
"

In English it would be roughly,

" Arrows fired by Lord Rama have never missed their target,
There is no other man on earth who can challenge Ramachari,
He is one who has the power of Bheema and intelligence/will power of Chanakya
"

It made my day...or should I say night !!!!

Wayanad Travelogue
New one
[info]shreyask
This is my second travelogue in as many weeks. Though the previous one was months after I actually traveled this one is a week after I traveled. This time it was Wayanad, Kerala that I will write about. I was there on 29,30 and 31 of last month and I will write this in a little different way by splitting it into Day1, Day2 and Day3. I am sorry if it is too long, but I will go into details so that someone who may travel could use this. So get ready !!!!

Day 1:

We started out in two cars, one was my car  the other was my cousins'. We were 6 of us traveling me, mom, dad, aunt, my cousin and his wife. We decided to start early so that we could avoid the weekend Mysore road traffic, but fortunately there wasn't much traffic. We started in my car from home @ 7 AM and had decided to meet my cousin at the intersection of NICE road and Mysore road. The trip got off to such a great start that as I was taking the exit loop on NICE to Mysore road my cousin also arrived there, it was perfect timing from both of us !!!! My cousin has the walkie-talkie which we used during the Nagarhole trip and works wonderfully well to co-ordinate between the cars, using them is total fun. We setup the device, checked the communication and started off towards Mysore. We decided to stop @ Shivalli for breakfast. After driving for about an hour I realized that we had just gone past the Shivalli hotel and with the speed I was doing and the traffic behind me I couldn't just break immediately so we had come quite far from the hotel. So we decided it was not worth going back and having breakfast there. We had some nice bread toast that my cousin had bought from a bakery near his place and we gulped that down. We decided to stop @ Maddur Coffee Day for some coffee. After picking up some things to drink and some cookies we headed off to Mysore. The weather was just perfect neither too hot nor too cold. We decided to drive through Mysore city instead of taking the ring road as it is just too long. We passed Mysore city and hit the Bandipur road towards Nanjangud. We hit some traffic on this route mainly because some barricades were placed by the police to check speeding. Once we did some 10 kms from Mysore the traffic eased up and we passed the temple city of Nanjangud, called the Kasi of the South. I would like to digress here to mention that if you have not seen the temple it is worth visiting it once, the architecture is nice and it is a huge temple.
Now we there was virtually no vehicle movement apart from those traveling to either Bandipur or Wayanad. We saw many coconut vendors waving and stopped for having some tender coconut. That was really refreshing and we kicked on towards Gundulpet, the last town in Karnataka on the Kerala/TN border. At Gundulpet we took the deviation towards Sultan Bathery which is on NH212 towards Calicut. Sultan Bathery is the first big town on Kerala side after the border. The drive from Gundulpet for about 4-5 kms is bumpy and there was asphalting going on, which slowed us a bit to avoid the small jelly stones hitting the chasis of the car. The scenic beauty begins here, there are plain lands to your right hand side and the majestic Gopala swamy hills on the left hand side. It  was a breath taking view. After about 8-10 kms the Bandipur range begins and if you are lucky you will have elephants crossing the road. It is a winding road and is beautiful to drive both the scenery and the road quality. We entered Kerala after driving for about 45 minutes from Gundulpet. We passed the check post after about 3 kms from the border. The vegetation changes dramatically once you enter Kerala, it is mostly Bamboo forests and tall grass. The road is beautiful and is covered by huge Bamboo trees as if they are welcoming you. We took some photographs and moved on, we passed through Sultan Bathery and reached Kalpetta the second big town in Wayanad district were we had our booking. We were booked into Harithagiri a good hotel with excellent service. We checked in freshened up and went for lunch. I decided to have Kerala paratha as it had been a while since I had one and ordered for it. The food was amazing and I ended up eating Kerala paratha for lunch on all the three days !!!!
We finished lunch and decided to see Pookot lake and Lakkidi view point as they were the closest. We first went to Pookot lake and liked it as soon as we saw it. We decided to take a boat ride and took a row boat which could seat all of us. We spent about an hour at the lake first going around in the boat and getting various views of some beautiful peaks close by, mainly the Chembra peak the tallest on in the Wayanad range. The person rowing the boat mentioned that the water in the lake is one of the purest in the region and tastes sweet so I decided to go for it and it was damn sweet and cold !!!! After the boating we took a walk around the lake which was refreshing.
Next we headed off to the Lakkidi view point which has some breath taking views of the Western Ghats and the hairpins of the NH212 descending into Calicut is excellent. You just feel like sitting there and letting the feeling sink in. We spent almost an hour there waiting to get a glimpse of the Sunset. But unfortunately we couldn't get a clear view as there were clouds. We then headed back to the hotel, had dinner and retired for the day, satisfied with the glimpse of Wayanad that we had got the first day.

Day 2:

We decided to visit 2 places on Day 2. The first one was Thirunelly and the next one was Kuruva Island. People who have been earlier had told me not miss these places as they are unique and special for their location and scenic beauty. So first we headed off to Thirunelly which is about 60 kms from Kalpetta where we were staying. We asked the hotel guys to pack us some lunch and they did so specially for us as their lunch preparations don't start till noon. We started early by 8.30 AM and were told by the hotel guys that the roads are not that great and it would take an hour and half or more to travel the 60 kms to Thirunelly. The route was Kalpetta -> Mananthavady -> Karitkulam -> Thirunelly. We took the deviation to Mananthvady from NH 212 just outside of the town of Kalpaetta. The road and drive upto Mananthavady was excellent. The mountains on one side still covered with the early morning mist and the green paddy fields on the other basked in the early morning sun, it was one sight not be missed. The entire drive till we reached Manathavady had many scenes like this. Once at Mananthavady we had to take the Mysore-Mananthavady road and head towards Karitkulam, after a little bit of confusion we found the route and headed off towards kartikulam, again the road was excellent and this was one too had similar points like the previous roads. Once we went past the small town of Kartikulam we took a left turn towards Thirunelly. The drive from here to Thirunelly was unforgettable. The road is very good and passes through the forests of Begur and Tholepatty range. These ranges are extensions of the Nagarhole National Park. The entire area was very green and was beautiful to drive through. I turned off the A/C in my car, downed the windows to enjoy the clean and pure air while driving and mind you that made the drive even more pleasing. Just about 5 kms before Tholepatty we took the deviation towards Thirunelly and finally reached Thirnuelly in 15 minutes. The road was not bad at all, and we could have reached the place in an hour hadn't we stopped to click some pictures en route.
Once at Thrinuelly we realized why people had told me not to  miss it. The temple is in a slightly elevated place and when we reached there saw the beauty of the place. It is covered on all sides by hills and looks like the nature is holding this temple in its palm. The feeling of being there and seeing the nature was soothing. We went for darshana of the local deity which is Lord Vishnu, took more snaps of the place and headed towards Papanasini. This place is about a kilometers walk from the temple, there are stairs and concrete paths to reach the place. I was told by my friend not miss this place too as the water there is very special, because it is untouched, pure and full of minerals. He had even told me you could feel the texture of the water and feel its weight because it was the "real mineral water" !!!. My cousin and I tried it and it indeed was true. The water was sweet, you could feel it and it was indeed heavy. Apparently this place is sacred to many people as this is considered that if you take a dip here, all your sins are washed off and ceremonies performed here are supposed bring salvation to the passed away. One more thing about this place is the cleanliness, there are people who are present to ensure the cleanliness of the place. On the way back it started raining and we got drenched in the rain, after waiting for a while for the rain to stop we headed to our next destination, Kuruva island. We had lunch in the middle of the forest and decided to move on.
After about half an hours' drive we reached Kuruva island, to reach Kuruva Island you have to come back to Kartikulam from Thirunelly and take a turn towards Mysore on the Mysore-Mananthavady road and then after about 0.5 km take a right turn. From here the island is just 5 kms or so. But the road is average and it will take about 15 minutes to reach to the island. The island is a 1000 acre island located on the Kabini river and we had to take a boat ride to reach there. We walked here for about 1 km or so then found a guide who took us around the island. We spent sometime on the rocks in the Kabini river before we headed back towards the boats to get to the car. Wit the guide you can cross the river and go over to other small islands close by, but we were exhausted by our walk to Papnasini and decided to spend time on the rocks instead. We then headed back to Kalpetta, tracing back the route we took in the morning. We reached Kalpetta by about 6.30pm. Had some snacks, dinner a little later in the night and retired for the day. Again very satisfied after a good day's outing.

Day 3 :

We checked with the hotel guys what we could see till about noon, as we had to start back to Bangalore. They suggested we cover one of the falls as we had seen none till then.  Wayanad has a generous sprinkling of waterfalls with Soochipura and Meenmutty being the most popular of them. The hotel staff recommended Soochipura as it is closeby and there isn't much walking compared to Meenmutty. The drive from Kalpetta to Soochipura falls is about 30 kms and passes through a small town called Meppadi. This drive was different from others as this route is covered by Tea gardens on both the sides, with Chembra peak always visible in the background through out the entire drive. We spent quite a bit of time taking pictures in these gardens. We reached Soochipura falls after about 45 minutes drive. We still had to descend about 1 km by foot to reach the falls. One caution is, the climb is steep and can be energy sapping, so I advice you to carry lot of refreshments and glucose if needed. The path is a neat stoned path with stairs closer o the falls. The falls was excellent, we spent about an hour and half there. Another caution is, the rocks in Soochipura near the falls are slippery and take utmost care while getting close to the falls, as the it could hurt you. My cousin found this out the hard way by getting a cut, after a slip near the falls. We then came back to Kalpetta, finished lunch and headed back to Bangalore, taking the same route we took to reach the place. We had coffee @ Mysore, dinner @ Kamat Lokaruchi before reaching home by 11.30 PM.

Nagarhole - Travelogue
New one
[info]shreyask
Hi guys,

I am just back from a grueling schedule of exams, had to write 4 papers in 4 days, although preparation was not that great :P you still have to go through the mental grind to finish it off. Moreover it had the added incentive of being the penultimate term after this I am just left with one subject and a thesis to finish in about 4 months time.

Couple of months before these exams, I took a break and drove to Nagarhole with cousins and parents. Many people had been requesting me to post a travelogue for sometime now and me being me ;-) I'm doing this now.

Now to serious matters, I will break this up into three sections,

1. How to get there?
2. Where to stay?
3. Things to do in and around Nagarhole.

How to get there ?
---------------
Start off early in the morning say max by 7 am so as to avoid Bangalore traffic. For me it was not as a big issue as accessibility to NICE corridor is not an issue and I don't have to negotiate the city traffic that much. Ok now hit the Bangalore - Mysore highway and start driving towards Mysore. If you have started early you are most likely to feel hungry :-) and there are some good places to stop by and eat. For those who want to taste road side "tatte idli" (plate idli) you have umpteen shops around Bidadi and they are good. However with parents around it is was not a good idea for me to stop there for breakfast. Further ahead just after Ramanagara is Kamat Lokaruchi. It is a nice place to have breakfast, but if you are traveling on a weekend, which most likely you will my advice is please DONOT stop here as it will waste at least 1.5 hrs of your time. It is mad rush on a weekend for breakfast in this place. I prefer and advice you to have breakfast at Shivalli Tiffin Room. This is relatively less crowded and serves good food. The kadabu (idli cooked in the shape of a cup in covered by a leaf and not the sweet that we usually associate with) is a good option here and is very soft and is always served hot. We had kadbu and coffee buffs had some very nice coffee here and we moved on. Then we stopped at Maddur Coffee Day and picked up some peanuts and coffee from there and started heading towards mysore.
To go to Nagarhole from Mysore road there are two possible routes one is the deviation just after Srirangapatna towards KRS - if you take this route it saves quite a bit of distance and also the road is not bad. When you take this route you have to be careful about the deviations on this road when you start heading towards KRS. The first one is the fork towards KRS, DONOT go towards KRS unless you plan to visit it en route. Now that you are on the road not going towards KRS after some distance say about 4 -5 kilometers there is another deviation one goes to Mysore Ring Road and the other towards Hunsur / Madikeri road. Take the road towards Hunsur/Madikeri Road. This is a good road with relatively less traffic albeit a bit narrow, but with with less traffic you feel the road is all yours :-) .
The other road is after Srirangapatna head off towards Mysore and just before you enter the city there is a signal which is the Mysore Ring road. You need to take a right turn at this signal to get to Hunsur/Madikeri road. There are elaborate direction on this route and it is almost next to impossible to miss this turn. For first timers I strongly recommend taking the second route as it is pretty straight forward. Once on Mysore Ring road just keep going until you see a right turn onto the Hunsur/Madikeri Road. The first option that I gave will bypass all this ring road and join the Hunsur/Madikeri road.
On this road just head towards Hunsur, this is a beautiful road and pump the gas up on your car upto the level you feel comfortable. I drove my car at average speed of 80 kmph on this road. Now when you near Hunsur about 4-5 kms before Hunsur you will see a fork. There is a signboard indicating left for Nagarhole and straight for Kushalnagar onto Madikeri. Take the left fork and head into Hunsur town. It is a small town like any other midsized town in the country, but don't speed here as people arbitrarily keep crossing, drive ccarefully. If you want to fill up petrol or any refreshments for yourself do it here there is nothing beyond this point. Ok now after driving for about kilometer into the town you will see a petrol pump on your left hand side. This is where you need to take a left turn towards Nagarhole, there are KSTDC boards ( yellow colored ones) indicating the turn. Now you are on HD Kote road. This road is average and don't try to reach speeds in excess of 40 kmph unless you are driving an off roader or something like that. On this road after about 5 kilometeres there is a fork towards Nagarhole National Park to your right, take that road and start heading towards Nagarhole. It is about 45 kilometers from this fork. After driving for about 17-20 kilometers you will encounter the periphery of the National Park where there is a gate, you need to register your vehicle here and pay some fees fixed by the department.
Now there are two places inside the park the first one about 8 kilometers from the gate is a place called Murkal, which is an elephant training camp. There are nice forest department guest house if you know someone in the department you can get accommodation here. The second one is Nagarhole about 20 kms further from Murkal where there are a couple of guest houses and a dormitory kind of setup (we were booked into this as the cottages were full). You can book these through the forest department office in Malleswaram, but if you know someone it is always better :-). So having started from bangalore at close to 8 am we reached there by about 2 pm in the afternoon. The road upto about 5 kms from Nagarhole is excellent and driving is not a problem at all.

Summary, route is Bangalore -> Mysore Ring road -> Hunsur -> Nagarhole.

Where to stay?
-------------
As I said earlier there are the two options one in Murkal and the other in nagarhole, I will also talk about the third option in a while. So if you stay at Murkal you have to drive down to Nagarhole yourself the safari which runs from Nagarhole.
If you stay in Nagarhole try the cottages we tried to get them but everything was full and we got the dormitory which is not great, it is not well maintained and toilets not clean so we had a bit of tough time I would say. Apart from this it is a good place to stay in the middle of the forest. There are two options for food either you take your won stuff ;-) or eat something which is cooked there by the folks there which is not bad for food in the middle of the forest. They serve you very well here and it would be a good idea to tip them well were treated very well giving us hot lunch, breakfast, tea 3 times which was good and we tipped them well because the service was nice.
The third and possibly the best of the lot is to stay in a place called Kutta. This is a small -sleepy towon bordering Kerala about 18 kms from Nagarhole and outside the national park. The drive to this town has some breathtaking views of Waynad hills (Nagarhole and Waynad are the same range). There are umpteem home stays here and you can look up the internet for. We just stopped by to take a look at one of the homestays and it is really a very good option. The cost would be Rs.1000/- per person per day which includes wonderful accommodation, tea 2 times, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I looked at one called Narikadi homestay and spoke to the owners at length for about an hour and they were very nice people and I will probably choose this option when I go there.

Things to do
------------

Day 1 ( half a day - after arrival)
--------------------------
If you are staying in Nagarhole, you can checkin to your accommodation there freshen up and then take a safari later in the evening. Otherwise you would do well to take the Safari at the earliest and head towards Kutta for your homestay as it is advisable not to drive through the park after dark as there are likely animals wandering on the road and most likely they are elephants and you have to just stand until they clear out the road which may sometimes take hours. So get to preferably get to Kutta before sunset, but at least outside the park before sunset.

Since we stayed in the park we took a late safari and managed to couple of elephants and some deers that's it.

Day 2 ( full day )
---------------
You can either take a Safari in the park. Preferably take the first one as there is a possibility of some sighting
the closest we came to spotting the big and the elusive cat was some pugmarks which according to our safari bus driver was relatively fresh. This safari took about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Then we freshened up had some quick breakfast and headed towards Irupu falls that is about 12 kms ahead of Kutta on the Kutta-Gonikoppa road. You need to take a slight devaition of about 2 kms to get to the foothills of Brahmagiri hills where the Brahmagiri sanctuary is located. These 2 kms of road is virtually non-existent and preferably you should have a vehicle with good power the ascent back is very steep. This stretch of road is extremely narrow and you need all your driving skills negotiating this stretch and if a vehicle comes in the opposite direction take it easy don't get tensed and carefully tread your path. But the pain you take to get there is worth it. Once you reach brahmagiri there is a small temple there which is Kerala style architecture I was told. There is a pathway adjacent to the temple to reach the falls it is about a half a kilometer trek to reach the falls, there are steps to reach there and there is a observation deck there to see the falls for those who can't climb beyond this deck as the climb gets a bit steep beyond that.
But Irupu falls is one of its kind and you would love spending time there, the waterfall is relatively small and safe to sit under the water that falls from about 30-40 feet with tremendous force it is the most natural body massage you will get. The water is clean and cold, if you go in winter like I did your body will writhe with the pain because of the cold water, but that is fun :-) . You can easily spend couple of hours here. We saw this came back to Nagarhole by about 1.30 PM and started back to bangalore taking the same route that we took to reach there.

Day 3 ( Optional - I would say go for this if it is possible which was not for us)
------------------------------------------------------------
After seeing Irupu falls you have two options either you can head back to Kutta , have lunch and then head to Waynad, I think it is Tholepatty wildlife sanctuary which houses about 900 elephants that is the closest. I am not 100% sure about the name of the sanctuary but is one of those in Waynad district of Kerala. This is about 10 kms form Kutta and my cousin who was there earlier vouches for it and also said that the vegetation there is totally different from the Nagarhole range and worth taking a look.
The other option is to drive to Madikeri on Day 2 after seeing Irupu falls through Gonikoppa - > Virajpet - > Madikeri, the road is average and it about 3-4 hrs drive from Irupu to Madikeri. You would have probably the evening of Day 2 and Day 3 to see Madikeri and head back to Banagalore. The road from Madikeri to Bangalore is good in patches and the route is : Madikeri - > Kushalnagar - > Piriyapatna -> Hunsur -> Mysore/Srirangapatna - > Bangalore.

This was my experience of a trip to Nagarhole National park about 2 months back. There may be typos and some other mistakes, please feel free to comment and let me know.

Last weekend......
New one
[info]shreyask
For  a change last weekend was slightly different, there were no classes and I slept the entire day. During Thursday lunch @ The Forum I had decided to buy tickets for Night show of Gaalipata ( latest Kannada movie for thos who didn't know) on Saturday.

So after a nice nap on Saturday we ( Mom, Dad, Uncle and Myself) set off to Forum. First we headed to Transit which on Saturdays looks like a sophisticated and non-stinking City Market. You basically have to keep hunting for a place and then go get food from the over crowded counters!!! We had a nice dinner and gulped down some coffee @ Kalmane Coffees, basically to beat the sleep if the movie would make us do so. Fortunately it did not :-)

Now about the movie itself, I think many might have already dissected the movie I will just give my ratings to various components on a scale of 10.

Acting
----------

Female Lead ( 3 of them ) - 6/10 ( Except Neetu who keeps shouting in the movie not everybody does enough, Daisy is a eye candy !!!)
Male Lead      ( 3 of them ) - Ganesh - 9/10 --> superb acting and you can see the pain in his face in the sad scenes.
Diganht  - 7/10 --> Does his bit, I good in patches
Rajesh   - 6/10 --> I feel he is a better singer, but provided he improves his acting skills, he can be good.

I should also mention other worthy performances,

Rangayana Raghu - 10/10 --> Superb, all  I can say his style acting so natural.....
Anant Nag        -   9/10 --> Very witty and another good one from him.

Lyrics   - 10/10 ( I give this full score because of the two sets of lyrics in different songs by Jayant Kaikini and Yograj Bhat)

"
Ninna manada kavite saala padeva naanu saalagara
     Kanna toredu dochikonda nenapugalige paaludaara..."

              - From Minchangi Neenu Baralu by Jayant Kaikini

"
      Jeeva Kaleva amrutake olavendu hesaridabahude
       prana uliso khayilege preetiyendennabahude..."

          - From Jeeva Kaleva by Yograj Bhat

Music by V. Harikrishna - 9/10. This gets 9 becuase of Aha Bedaru bombe...I didn't like the song although it is very peppy. My char topper is Minchagi Neenu Baralu by Sonu Nigam .  Nadheem Dheem Tanana by Chitra is good on the ears. Jeeva Kaleva has pain in the music.

Photogrpahy - 10/10 --> Excellent, the best I have seen in a Kannada movie, you have to see to belive it. Kodachadri and Shivanasamudra have been captured like never before...ufffff

Dialogues - Amazing very witty and crisp.

Happy Blogging and Reading

On a trip to Malpe couple of weekends back we were discussing how small man was in front of these oceans and a colleague of mine shot this picture.

Looking at this gives me a feeling of this being timeless, what do you think?
